Domain Name & Business Emails

The easiest way to understand what a domain name is would be to think about it as a house. If we pretend your website is a house and you would like to make your home open to the public, you would need a site or land to park your home, the same goes for a website, you need a domain to park it. A domain name is used to advertise your business to the public, it is the address where people can go to find you online. Domain names are unique; once you have registered yours, nobody else can use them.

Domain Names are responsible for many aspects of your business including business email accounts and website parking and hosting.

What is a domain name?

A domain name is an address that people use to find your website. A domain name consists of two portions, the first part being the "top level domain" or TLD, which identifies what country your website resides in. The second part is the "second level domain" which is how you are identified. For example, if an individual wanted to visit a website with a TLD of .com and a second level domain of google then the individual would type google.com into their browser bar for them to be directed to that site. Domain names are not case-sensitive so both .com and COM are the same thing. Domain names are often broken down into smaller words separated by periods. So if your second level domain was personalcoach then it would be personal-coach.com or personalcoach.

Domain TLD's

The domain name system (DNS) is an essential part of the Internet. It maps domains to IP addresses and vice versa, so when you type in a domain, your computer can find it and take you to the appropriate website. Domain names are limited to only 26 characters and usually consist of two parts: a top-level domain (TLD) and a second-level domain name. The TLDs are the letters at the end of the domain that designate what type of site it is (.com, .org, etc.). The second-level domain name is whatever comes after the TLD. For example, in www.yahoo.com/, "yahoo" is the second level. A TLD can be any word or phrase but there are certain restrictions on what letters may be used in them: This includes words like .com or .org; phrases like .edu or .gov; and two-letter combinations like .us and .co. Note: All TLDs must start with a letter in contrast to many other countries where they can start with any character including numbers, symbols, etc...

New Zealand Domain TLD's

What are Domain TLDs? A domain name registry is the organization that assigns domain names to websites, and manages the systems which make them work. You can register your domain with a domain name registrar, who will assign you a top-level domain (TLD). There are different types of TLDs. For example, .nz is one of New Zealand's TLDs, and more commonly you could use the following: .co.nz .org.nz .net, .com, .govt.nz, .edu, .ac.nz and there are so many more.

Business Email Address

The first step in getting a business email address is to obtain a domain name for your business, once that is done you can then set up your mail server. There are several different types of mail servers including the following:

POP & IMAP Mail Servers

POP & IMAP are two of the most common mail server types. A POP server stores all email on a central server and users can access their email from any computer with a client that supports POP. A user's email is not stored on the local computer, which is where an IMAP server differs. With an IMAP server, users can log into their mailbox from any computer and read and manage their mailboxes remotely.

Why do you need a Mail Server?

Mail servers help businesses keep track of emails sent to and from their domain name. This helps avoid sending duplicate messages or messages that are sent to the wrong person. This also helps businesses maintain the integrity of their messaging system since they have full visibility into who sends what to whom and when those messages were sent. Mail servers also provide businesses with advanced capabilities through features like spam filtering, antivirus protection, encryption, message archiving and more. In this article, we'll cover how to set up your own mail server for your business -- no matter what type of mail server you choose!

Gsuite Mail

Gsuite is a web-based email service provided by Google and is the primary mail server for Google Apps for Business.

Office 365 Mail

The office 365 mail server is a cloud-based email server, which can be accessed on the web or through a native app. It is recommended that you use this type of mail server as it is easy to use and you have access to all the features regardless of your device, provided you have an internet connection.

The Mailbox Server

Also known as Microsoft Exchange Server, this type of mail server requires installation on a standalone computer and will require more technical knowledge in order to manage. If you choose to install Exchange Server then it will provide your business with the ability to send and receive emails from anywhere. However, if you are using Office 365 for your email service then it's likely that your customers may not need this functionality.

There’s no one-size-fits-all answer to this question. It all depends on the type of website you’re building, the features you want it to have, your budget, and your skillset and experience. Generally speaking, though, it takes anywhere from a few days to a few months to build a website. The more complex your website is and the more features you want it to have, the longer it’s likely to take. On the other hand, if you follow a well-planned and efficient development process, building a website can be both enjoyable and rewarding. If you have a tight deadline, we can shuffle projects to make it work for you.

There isn't a set amount that a website costs in New Zealand. The price can vary depending on the complexity of the website and the features that are included. On average, a basic website can cost anywhere from $1500 to $8000. More complex websites can cost upwards of $15,000, or large-scale eCommerce may even break $100,000 The price also depends on who is building your website, the timeline, the budget and the requirements. If you bring any quote to us from a competitor, we will beat it by 15%. You can save time and money by having pre-built templates, using priority software or doing it yourself, there are downsides to each method, so talk to us to decide the easiest path forward for your business.

Dolphinz Swim School had an existing Joomla based website that needed a refresh and various security updates. Brett is one of the few Joomla website builders that we could find. He was able to get our website up to date without having to do a full rebuild and all the time and money associated with that. He provided a cost effective solution for our business and understood our needs well. We would recommend Bretts skills and service to any business that needs website support.
